how to balance male and female energy

Emily was a competent woman in her team. While every job comes with its share of stress, Emily had been feeling off balance recently. She often felt the need to control situations at work, leading to many unhappy team members around her. She loved to take charge of her life while ensuring she was constantly busy.

Never a moment to take a pause, Emily would even rush through her household routine during the weekends after having plowed through multiple emails. With hardly a social life, Emily had no time to tap into what she honestly needed leading to exhaustion and unhappiness.

What made Emily the way she is? Why couldn’t a competent person find happiness despite the talents? Or, was she so entrapped in the culture of being a ‘Super Woman’ as defined by society?

There was nothing inherently wrong with Emily. What was happening here was a pure imbalance of the male and female energy, or the Yin and Yang balance, as we know it.

For those who have read Carl Jung’s theory of the Anima and Animus, would silently nod their heads in acceptance that there was indeed an imbalance here. As described by Carl, the *anima and animus represent the total unconscious feminine qualities or energies a man can possess and the masculine energy a female can possess.

A woman needs her masculine energy as much as a man needs his feminine energy.

So, what does Emily’s situation have to do with this? Well, when one of the divine masculine and feminine energies go out of balance, the results are chaotic in nature. When these two fundamental forces clash and one dominates the other or is repressed, things can manifest differently for every person.

The male and female energy is certainly not to be confused with gender casting of people. To put it simply, there are men who may have greater female energy whereas some women may display greater male energy. In short, both contain these energies and may use it differently.

The Yin and the Yang also represent these contrary forces that exists within the natural world. The symbol appears extremely simple but has many complex layers to its creation. The Yin (Black) and the Yang (White) with a seed of both in each all remind us about two opposite forces that complement each other to form a combined and seamless energy.

Just as a beautiful day fades into a setting sun and makes way for darkness, while the night moves away to beckon shades of dawn, the Yin and the Yang perfectly complement each other.

The Need to Break the Stereotypes of Masculine and Feminine Energy

A man who is taught to avoid expressing his feelings or acknowledging the emotion of sadness creates many internal imbalances. Women, as well as men, need permission to feel and express. The problem of stereotyping emotions such as, “Women are weak,” and “Men cannot cry” creates an unhealthy pattern of repressing emotions within all. Both grow up visualizing how one should ‘behave’ in an ideal society. The result? A man may not express his anger or sadness while ending up bottling his emotions.

A woman may not give herself permission to refuse certain tasks at work or on the homefront for the fear of breaking these set rules. If she is told she cannot be strong as she is a woman, she would never find her inner strength. While the inherent problem lies in the culture, often, this turmoil goes unnoticed and is harmful for self and the society.

A person can keep complaining endlessly and express anger, go into depression, display aggressiveness and more when he or she does not find an outlet to balance these energies. The raging flames of the fire can only be doused by water. Allow this fire to overpower, and destruction is inevitable. Waves that rise above also crash below into multiple waves to spread out and remain calm, only to rise again.

These forces flow beautifully and ever so seamlessly bringing a cohesive movement that rebalances these energies. These embody the Universal law - one that states everything must remain in harmony. This is what the male and female energy is about.

Hinduism mentions the concept of the ‘Ardhanarishvara’, to represent the androgynous form of the deities of Shiva and Parvati. The terms depict a half-male and a half-female form. One can draw parallels of this concept similar to what we have discussed earlier. The union of the male and female energy represents the equal position that is given in the Indian culture. The male and the female must coexist while being totally inseparable.

What is Masculine and Feminine Energy?

Feminine Energy:

Feminine energy represents the qualities of using one’s intuition, expansiveness, softness, and going beyond what is there at the present moment. The right amount of feminine energy means you are open to receive, fluid and flowing, know how to relax, and allow life to take its course while developing the power to let go. This is about displaying creativity and feelings. Feminine energy is about being sensual, emotional, and nurturing.

An example of overpowering female energy would be a person who finds it difficult to take a stance and be assertive leaving a person vulnerable for many things. A person may tend to pretend ‘Everything Is OK’ while constantly reprimanding the self for not being assertive enough.

Masculine Energy:

Masculine energy has a strong focus. The masculine energy characteristics are action-oriented and often competitive while being entrepreneurial. A dominant force, this energy is considered more physical than being subtle. The right amount of masculine energy translates to more efficiency at the workplace, logical decision-making skills, with appropriate control. Masculine energy is about being strong, structured and driven by goals.

But what happens when there is an overpowering of this masculine energy? The result would just be like Emily, with the need to control the environment, a thirst for doing more than required, the constant need to micromanage others, and the need to look after others’ needs more than her own. It’s about not slowing down to relax and enjoy life.

If you can understand the beauty of this balance, you will soon hold the Universe within your hands.

That could explain why certain women may tend to ‘lead’ a partner in a dance such as ‘Salsa’, where as per discipline, the male is the leader, and the female needs to act as a follower. Here, the dominance of female masculinity may cause a woman to lead.

You can consider masculine energy as something that flows in a straight line. Visualize this energy as sharp angles that knows its goals but flows along slowly. Whereas feminine energy swirls around playfully like the rushing water of a river - energetic yet taking its own course. Following a path that is based on intuition. This energy can gush along boldly and accomplish multiple things in one go.

As you can see, the masculine and feminine energy are both two sides of the same coin yet so disparate and flowing. This energy influences all of us differently, and it is important to maintain both in a balanced manner.

A woman needs her masculine energy as much as a man needs his feminine energy. Men can choose to be kinder, or gentler without losing the assertiveness and including a display of vulnerability. Women can develop their logical thinking while being individualistic and retaining a tinge of aggressiveness to get the desired results from life.

But, how does one find the energy balance?

Firstly, you need to analyze your current situations and decisions.

  • Are you happy with your life?
  • Have you felt content with the decisions you have taken?
  • Do you feel an imbalance? If so, where are your energies focused?
  • **What do you need more of? Which energy do you need to cultivate?
  • How often do you speak the truth and allow yourself to be you?
  • Do you feel any part of your personality is overpowering you?

**If you are feeling aimless about your career, you might need to tap that masculine energy. If you are struggling with your communication skills, time to increase your feminine energy.

Once you increase your awareness about the type of energy that dominates your personality, you can work around improving the weaker energy.
