How To Connect with Yourself?

In the whirlwind of modern life, we often find ourselves swept away by the demands of work, relationships, and the never-ending stream of notifications on our smartphones. Amidst this chaos, it's easy to lose touch with the most crucial person in our lives: ourselves.

There could be several reasons you feel detached from your self, but the catch is to identify the signs before it's too late.

In this blog, I will highlight how to connect with yourself and strengthen your connection to yourself like never before.

The Lost Art of Self-Connection

In a world brimming with external distractions, the art of self-connection has become a lost treasure. We are so busy catching up with the latest celebrity gossip and seeking that momentary dopamine hit from mindless scrolling on the phone that we lose that connection with our own selves.

Let's kickstart our exploration with a powerful quote by the renowned author Rumi: "Do not be satisfied with the stories that come before you. Unfold your own myth." This quote encapsulates the essence of reconnecting with oneself. It urges us to seek our own stories, our own truths, and our own passions.

Journey to Reconnect and Strengthen Your Relationship with Yourself – Top 5 Ways

Why, you may wonder, is it so vital to reconnect with ourselves? Think of it this way: you can't pour from an empty cup. To give your best to the world and those you care about, you must first fill yourself with love, purpose, and understanding.

Following are a few ways how to strengthen your connection to yourself:

1. Embrace Solitude

Our first step on this journey to self-connection is to embrace solitude. Finding moments of silence and solitude can be like discovering hidden treasures in a world filled with noise and constant chatter.

Remember what Aristotle said, “Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god." While we may not all aspire to godhood, Aristotle reminds us of the transformative power of solitude.

Some practical tips include:

  • Start small by allocating a few minutes of your day for solitude and extend the duration each day.
  • Take a leisurely walk in the park or by the road down from your home.
  • Spare 10-15 minutes out of your day to practice mindfulness meditation.

2. Self-reflection and Journaling

Our next step is to dive into the practice of self-reflection and journaling. Think of it as having a heart-to-heart conversation with yourself that can reveal your deepest desires and thoughts.

One particular quote I resonate with is, “I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn,” by Anne Frank. Journalling is a healthy escape to shake off the burden and reconnect with your inner self.

Some practical tips for this include:

  • Designate a specific time each day for journaling.
  • Journalling is all about letting your thoughts out and writing everything that crosses your mind.
  • Dedicate a section of your journal to gratitude. Reflect on the things you're grateful for, no matter how small they may seem.

3. Make Mindful Practices

Mindfulness is the art of being fully present in the moment, and it's a powerful tool for reconnecting with yourself. When we're mindful, we're not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future; we're experiencing life as it unfolds.

“You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf,” this quote by Jon Kabat-Zinn explains how one can live life with grace and self-awareness.

Some practical tips you can emulate are:

  • Take a few moments throughout the day to focus on your breath.
  • During meals, savor each bite
  • Lie down and mentally scan your body from head to toe, identify the tension in your body, and let it go.

4. Practice Self-Compassion

When reconnecting with yourself, practicing self-compassion isn’t an option but a necessity. This means treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a close friend.

“Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves that we would give to others,” is a quote by Kristin Neff that I live by and often tell my coaching clients, too.

Some of the practical tips for practicing self-compassion are:

  • Pay attention to your inner dialogue and remove space for negative self-talk.
  • As humans, we all make mistakes. Forgive yourself and move on.
  • Create self-care rituals that nourish your mind, body, and soul.

5. Regular Self-Assessment

Connecting to your inner self is a lifelong journey that deserves and requires regular check-ins. Doing so ensures that you are on the right course and also helps you assess the progress that you have made so far.

To quote the famous motivational speaker Zig Ziglar: "You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great." The key is starting and checking in with yourself along the way.

Following are a few practical tips you should follow:

  • If daily check-ins are overwhelming, set aside a specific time each week to reflect on your progress in reconnecting with yourself. What's working? What needs adjustment?
  • It is great that you celebrate bigger milestones, but what about the smaller ones? Celebrate small and significant milestones that you achieve in your life.
  • Be willing to adapt your strategies as you evolve. What once worked for you may need adjustments as you grow and change.
