How to Rescue Your Goals When Feeling Demotivated?

We've all been there. You set out with a vision, a burning desire to achieve a goal, only to find yourself languishing in the murky depths of demotivation. The initial spark seems to have dwindled, replaced by a disheartening sense of "what's the point?"

This temporary slump doesn't have to spell the end of your aspirations. Just like a flickering candle can be reignited, your goals can be rescued from the clutches of doubt and procrastination. Like Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.”

Let's delve into some practical strategies to help you rekindle the flame and reignite your journey toward success.

1. Reconnect with the "Why"

When you are stuck in a limbo of dimmed spark and impending procrastination, the one thing that can help you get out of that slump is to redefine the purpose, the “why” behind your goal. What was the initial spark that ignited your passion?

Was it the desire to learn a new skill, break free from a monotonous routine, or contribute positively to the world? Reminding yourself of the deeper purpose behind your aspirations fills you with a new sense of passion, which will help you get back on track.

As Maya Angelou said, "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." Rekindle the connection to your "why," and you'll find the motivation to keep creating.

2. Break Things Down into Manageable Steps

Sometimes, looking at a massive goal can feel overwhelming, leading to paralysis. To counter this, break down your objective into smaller, achievable steps. In more professional terms, it is known as “task decomposition.”

Think of it like climbing a mountain – you wouldn't attempt the entire ascent in one go, would you? Plan milestones, celebrate small victories, and watch the sense of accomplishment fuel your progress.

Sometimes, it is easier to break down the pieces and finish them instead of doing a significant portion of the task in one go. Not only does it make you afraid of the task, but it also makes you subconsciously “de-prioritize” it until the very last minute.

3. Embrace the Power of "Done is Better Than Perfect"

It is often said that your hunger for perfection can be a double-edged sword. While it fosters excellence, it can also lead to procrastination and self-doubt. Remember, progress, not perfection, is the key.

Perfectionism often prevents you from setting out on the road towards achieving your goals, especially when there’s a lingering thought in the back of your mind saying, “What if you fail?” “What if the work you are doing isn’t optimal?”

Rejection, failure, and mistakes are part of your success journey. They are inevitable; to be fair, you will find no one whose successful journey has been 100% perfect. It is impossible and impractical all at once. Instead of letting the fear of making mistakes hold you back, use it as a learning point.

As author Neil Gaiman reminds us, "Just keep working. You'll get there. The only way to fail is to quit."

4. Find Your Tribe: Surround Yourself with Encouragement

People who aren’t hyping you up or supporting you in your journey to success are probably not the kind of people you need. Having positive influences in your life can be what you need to reach your goals when feeling demotivated.

Seek out a support system – friends, family, or even online communities – who believe in you and your goals. You don’t have to depend on their validation, but having people genuinely there to support you and celebrate your milestones is often the encouragement you need to fuel your journey.

Additionally, while you are on your journey to make your goals a reality, you might find yourself in moments when you are down, beaten up, and lacking motivation. Doing things that bring you joy and motivation, especially with your people around, is an effective way to combat that negativity.

5. Celebrate the Process and the Journey, Not Just the Destination

We are often so engrossed and focused on achieving our goals that we fail to celebrate the journey. Let’s say that your goal is to build your business from scratch. You have the work plan figured out, and you have a vision that you want to execute. The end goal is to see your business up and running.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? Well, being able to achieve that goal is fantastic and worth applauding. But what about the process of achieving that goal? Did you celebrate when you acquired the space for your business? Did you celebrate when you hired your first employee? Did you celebrate when you bagged your first client? If you don’t celebrate each milestone, despite how big or small it is, you will feel overwhelmed throughout the process.

To combat the pressure of wanting to “achieve success and achieve your goals,” you somehow have to give yourself small doses of happiness by celebrating each milestone.

Remember:

  • We all face detours and stumbles. Don't beat yourself up if you fall off track. Acknowledge the misstep, learn from it, and get back on your feet.
  • A healthy mind and body are essential for sustained motivation. Prioritize getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food, and engaging in activities that bring you joy.
  • Spend a few minutes each day picturing yourself achieving your goal. Immerse yourself in the positive emotions associated with reaching your dream. This mental rehearsal can significantly enhance your motivation.

Final Words

The road to achieving your goals will not always be smooth. But with the right mindset, practical strategies, and a supportive network, you can overcome temporary slumps and reignite the flame of your aspirations. These are some of the practical advice that I personally believe in as a coach and trainer myself.

One thing that I can vouch for is investing in yourself if you want to better yourself and work towards your goals. Fostering a growth mindset, upskilling, constant learning, etc., are the foundation of your success journey. This is where Matrrix’s ICF Coach Training programs come into the picture.

Remember, the most critical step is to take action – even a tiny step forward is a step in the right direction.
