Understanding the basics of self-care
Before I familiarize you with some of my favorite self-care tips, I must break down and explain the basics.
This is where we together explore the “why” behind self-care. We will explore its significance, the elements that make up the concept of self-care, and its role in making you strong, resilient, and well-maintained.
The following are the key aspects of self-care:
Physical health
Physical health is a fundamental component of self-care, supported by scientific evidence.
- For example, the food you eat is not only fueling your body but also optimizing your brain function and emotional stability.
- Beyond its role in maintaining physical fitness, regular exercise is a science-backed method for managing stress and enhancing mood by releasing endorphins.
- Sleep, which is often underestimated in our busy lives, is a biological imperative for self-care. During deep sleep, our brains consolidate memories and repair tissues, while chronic sleep deprivation can contribute to mood disorders and impaired decision-making.
I remember a client of mine, Rishi, who neglected his physical health for years, focusing solely on his demanding career. However, when he finally shifted his priorities and started focusing on his health, it reflected increased energy, reduced stress, and improved productivity.
Mental well-being
Our minds are a powerful tool, but it is also a source of turmoil. This is where self-care steps in. Activities like mindfulness and meditation, rooted in scientific research, become invaluable instruments in decluttering our thoughts and fostering mental clarity.
Self-care practices extend beyond momentary relaxation; they are fundamental to regulating our emotions and mitigating the risks and intensity of mental illnesses.
Even coaching is integral in helping you find the right track in your life that you might have lost on the way. It equips us to harness the power of our minds, cultivate emotional resilience, and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Emotional balance
As a coach, I've had the privilege of assisting clients from diverse backgrounds facing different challenges in life. One prevalent example is a client who found herself in the tumultuous aftermath of a painful breakup. In this emotionally charged moment, two pillars emerged as her lifeline: self-care and self-compassion.
Amidst the heartache and turmoil, she discovered that dedicating time to self-care was not just a luxury but a necessity. Engaging in practices that nurtured her emotional well-being, from mindfulness to journaling, became her refuge.
Additionally, practicing self-compassion and treating herself with the kindness and understanding she would offer a dear friend allowed her to find the strength to heal and move forward.
The profound lesson from this journey is clear: self-care possesses an extraordinary capacity to restore emotional equilibrium. It provides the essential tools to navigate the storms of life, fostering resilience and inner peace. In times of upheaval, self-care is not an indulgence but the compass guiding us back to emotional balance.
Practical Tips towards Self-Care
Simply knowing about self-care aspects isn’t enough if you don’t implement them in real time. This is where I find most people struggle. Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated, as I explain the same thing to my clients.
Self-care can be as small as taking a hot shower after a tedious day at work. Self-care can be indulging in a slice of your favorite cake when you are not feeling your best. On the contrary, self-care can also be a day where you go all out, do shopping, get a massage, treat yourself to delectable meals, and relax.
The definition of self-care is subjective, and so are the experiences. However, the list of the following tips should help you prioritize self-care in a more organized manner.
1. Set boundaries
Boundaries are your way of communicating what you will and will not tolerate to the world. Learn to say no when necessary and prioritize your needs without feeling guilty.
This, I feel, is one of those underrated pointers that not many people realize is self-care. Yes, turning into a whole new person from your people-pleasing persona is never easy. But you have got to start somewhere.
Lack of boundaries in life, especially with the people around you, will lead to people walking all over you, taking you for granted and making you feel like you aren’t good enough. When you set boundaries and say no, you take that control back in your life.
Trust me, the feeling of accomplishment that comes with this is beyond imagination.
2. Make sleep part of your self-care
The media representation has made the concept of self-care very one-dimensional. As I mentioned, treating yourself to an extravagant day is a form of self-care. But that’s not the only way.
Getting a quality night’s sleep is also a form of self-care that most people sleep on (pun intended)! Sleep is integral to our body’s functioning and regulates our physical and emotional well-being.
So, getting quality sleep is an underrated self-care tip that the majority of us don’t even realize in the first place.
3. Create a routine
Discipline and organization are a great form of self-care, and it comes with a routine. As boring as it sounds, routine is integral to keeping stress at bay.
If you are living in a constant state of survival and functioning on high adrenaline, it's time to take a breather and settle down a bit. A well-crafted routine with realistic goals can make that happen for you.
So, when planning your weekly self-care day, make sure that a routine is part of it. Also, a routine doesn’t have to be extensive. This could be as simple as setting aside 30 minutes daily for meditation, journaling, or a brisk walk. Personally speaking, I dedicate some time every day to meditation and journaling.
A routine sets a positive start to the day, keeping you sane.
4. Practice gratitude
In a world where there’s so much suffering, it's time we count our blessings rather than blaming our shortcomings.
It's true that no one’s life is perfect and most likely won’t be, but in a quest to complain about things we don’t have, we often forget to be grateful for what we do have.
Regularly express gratitude for the things you have and the experiences that bring you joy. Gratitude cultivates positivity and resilience. You will not even realize this, but practicing gratitude every day can transform your life in ways you can’t even imagine.
Remember the client I talked about briefly going through a bad breakup? We discussed practicing journaling and writing down things they are grateful for. The change was not immediate, but the shift from the nasty breakup to the blessings in life was her best form of self-care.
5. Step outside
An active lifestyle is also a form of self-care. You can prioritize a brisk evening walk or a nature walk with your pets as a form of self-care.
Studies indicate that spending time outside has the potential to not only reduce stress but lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, too. So, while you are breathing in some fresh air, listening to the birds, and enjoying the sunset, in a way, you are healing your physical and mental health too.
Spending time in nature is also great for people struggling with mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
A Gentle Reminder: Self-Care Is Ongoing
It's essential to remember that self-care is not a one-time fix; it's a lifelong journey. Just as a garden requires regular watering and care, so do you. Life's demands may ebb and flow, but your commitment to self-care should remain steadfast.
Let us take a moment to reflect. Are you giving yourself the love and care you deserve? Are you prioritizing your well-being as you should? If not, I encourage you to begin your journey toward better self-care today.
